This is our Frequently Asked Questions page. Here we will post questions that we have or questions that were sent to us. We are leaving the questions
open for responses from other site users. Feel free to share your advice, solutions, and any constructive comments you have regarding the question.
Before posting a new question, we encourage you to please read through the previously posted questions
and see if your question is already here. We want to keep repeated or closely related
questions to a minimum.
Some examples of questions could be:
1.) How do I hire a locksmith?
Ask your friends and family for locksmith companies they have used in the past. It is best to look for a locksmith company before
you actually need it. Research companies by calling them to ask them about their services, ask for referrals, ask for their address.
Check out their address to see if they are really at that location. Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau. If you are in a bind
and need a locksmith immediately, you'll have to go by the answers they give you on the phone. To protect yourself, get a work order in
writing before any work is done. This way a locksmith can't try and surprise you with extra charges after the job is done.
2.) How can I find out if they are really a local locksmith company?
That is the real trick. You have to do a lot of research. That is why it is suggested that you look for
a locksmith company before you need on. A good thing to start with is finding the address they say the company is at.
If they aren't at that address, then you know. They can have a local phone number, but it may just route to a call center
in another state.
3.) What are the typical rates to open a car door?
This is up to the locksmith company, the sites I have visited don't offer direct price for service charts.
Just get all of the cost details in writing before you agree to have a job done. A classic bait & switch scam is offering
you a really low quote on the phone, but charging a high amount once the job is done.
4.) Can a locksmith replace my car keys?
Yes, most locksmith companies have ignition key code cutting machines.
5.) A locksmith just drilled out my lock, instead of picking it. Was he really a locksmith?
This can be a subject of great debate. There are a good number of scam artist pretending to work as
locksmiths. He might have been one of them, since they are usually untrained. Though if there was something
else wrong with your lock, that might have been the only option. We need more detail on your situation.
6.)Where can I get locksmith tools?
Your best bet would at online locksmith supply stores. If you aren't a practicing locksmith, owning these
tools may be illegal in your state. Be sure to check your state's laws.
7.) Do I have to be licensed to work as a Locksmith?
This depends on your state. Due to all of the locksmith scams going on now, many states are requiring
people who work as locksmiths to be licensed. You will have to check on your state laws.
8.) I've lost my car keys. Can a locksmith make me a new key?
Yes, most locksmith companies have an ignition key code cutting machine.
9.)I broke my key off in a lock. Now what do I do?
If you can get the broken key out yourself, go for it.
Locksmiths have pick tools specifically designed for extracting broken key parts.
If you need a replacement key, a locksmith can probably cut one with key code of the lock.
10.) What is a lock pick gun?
This is a pick tool used to make cylinder lock pins jump up into their unlocking positions.
Thereby allowing the locksmith to turn the lock and open the door.
